PAST: After falling in love with electro at the age of 13, Darren’s musical career began. Growing up on a steady diet of electro and seventies dub reggae, acid-house hit and 1988-90 were “two or three years of constantly going out, clubbing and taking pills”. After working for a promotions company that shared a building with Boy’s Own, later to become Junior Boy’s Own, Darren eventually signed to NovaMute. Darren has also acted as the fourth member of Underworld, filling in for chum Darren Emerson and DJing Underworld’s university tours.
PRESENT: As a DJ, Darren has residencies at Voodoo, Liverpool and Temple of Sound, Dublin. Preferring to “mix and match” his venues, Darren’s brand of funky hard techno reaches all areas from Amsterdam to Vienna and from Naples to Lisbon. Labels such as Soma, Open, Belgium’s Reload, Primate and Drum Codes are cited as firm favourites. On the recording side twelve inches such as ‘Blueprints’ and ‘Cliffhanger’ have gone down a treat.
FUTURE: Following the release of his debut album ‘Underneath the Flightpath’ , a mix of lush string arrangements, deep beats and hard hitting assaults, Darren is set to do a stint of DJing dates in the UK with stablemate Richie-Hawtin, AKA Plastikman. Then off to Japan to promote the album before returning to cut some tracks along the lines of ‘Cliffhanger’ for Darren Emerson’s Underwater label. What a busy boy!
