Portishead vs. Tricky - Elliott decides.
With the controversy of competition between "Dummy" and "Maxinquaye", we sent our roving reporter Elliott out to find out exactly which album is better. First stop was Beth Gibbons, singer with Portishead:
Beth: Well, to be honest I don't think the albums are that similar. In fact, if you looked closely at us, I don't think you'd find any similarities at all.
Fine. We decided to speak to Tricky himself on the issue:
Tricky: Well, to be honest I don't think the albums are that similar. In fact, if you looked closely at us, I don't think you'd find any similarities at all.
I see. It seemed that the only way to solve this issue was to talk to the man on the street. So we did. On the street. In public. Together.
RAB: Excuse me, sir. Could you spare us a minute?
Man: Sure.
RAB: Really, that's very kind.
Man: No problem.
RAB: No, I mean it. Most people would just walk by.
Man: It's nothing.
RAB: Wow, modest as well.
[pause]
Man: Did you want to ask me something?
RAB: Oh yes, of course. I'm so sorry. Sometimes I just ramble on
and forget what I'm talking about. And some people can get really annoyed,
you know. I'm glad you're so understanding.
[pause]
RAB: And modest.
Man: Question?
RAB: Oh yes, the question! Of course. Well, you know the Tricky
and Portishead albums?
Man: No.
RAB: Well, you're no bloody help then. Piss off and stop wasting
my time!
Well, I think the one thing we can learn from this is that we can't learn what we're supposed to know because nobody know it, it's true. Not like you do.
